Lee K. is planning to lead a driving tour along the original Pony Express Trail on Saturday, June 21, weather and road conditions permitting. On this drive you will see original trail, which was also traveled by covered wagons headed to California, Fairfield’s historic Stagecoach Inn and Camp Floyd, various monuments and sites, several station ruins, and a scenic, reconstructed PX/stage station.

The PX drive starts at Fairfield, follows the Pony Express National Backcountry Byway to the vicinity of Ibapah, then turns north to meet I-80 at West Wendover, Nev., and returns to Salt Lake City via the freeway. The byway between Fairfield and Nevada is unpaved but maintained. Roads are very dusty and could be wash-boarded but do not require 4-wheel drive or high clearance vehicles.Vehicles must have good tires, a spare, and a full tank of gas. Expect a full day of adventure, 10 hours or possibly longer. Lodging can be reserved in West Wendover/Wendover, for those who prefer to spend the night before heading home.

If you are interested in participating (even if you don’t have a vehicle), email Lee at kreutzer@xmission.com by June 14. We will gather briefly after services on June 15 to organize ride-sharing and meet-up plans.
