+One is a new way of defining our Tabor community and engaging it for service.
Traditionally, when we think of the Tabor community and invite people to volunteer, we start with current members and maybe, ask some close family once in a while, but we don't go much farther. Also traditionally, when we invite people to Tabor, we've invited them to join us at a worship service.
+One hopes to broaden the definition of who is invited, what we are inviting them to and what their participation will look like. This invitation's goal is not focused on having them join us in worship, but in service.
-
WHO: +One is one more than you. Invite a friend, one of your kids, or a relative. We know someone(s) that aren't Lutheran or religious or interested in worship on a Sunday, Those someone(s) are caring, concerned and interested in contributing in a meaningful way, a demonstrative way, to help feed the humgry and house the homeless.
-
WHAT: +One service opportunities will be designed to be short-term particular activities. They will be small groups of volunteers, two to three sets of Tabor members and their +Ones.
-
WHEN: These +One small groups will be focused on timely needs that should be accomplished in a few hours and take place only a few times to completion.
When the various +One activities are completed and the service needs are fulfilled, we will hold +One Gratitude meals, inviting the whole +One community to gather, see the culmination of our collective service and thank one another for their valuable participation.
Some examples of +One service for the New Ministry with Family Promise housing a family in an apartment for six months:
-
When a family is chosen to move into our Tabor apartment, we will want to first - decide what a welcome might look like...a few toys, books, art supplies for the kids, some food in the cupboard and refrigerator, a packet/binder that describes nearby transportation, restaurants, grocery stores. This +One group would complete their service need by writing up the "welcome" so it may be repeated for new guests and then prepare the "welcome" for the family when they arrive.
-
During the construction process, we need to choose materials for various parts of the renovations, e.g. tile, bathroom hardware, cabinets, floor and paint colors. Another similar service opportunity will be doing the same for the kitchen: flooring, cabinets, hardware, sink and appliance package (refrigerator, dishwasher, stove). And another opportunity will be to pick out window coverings, e.g. shades, blinds for all the windows on the second floor. Each of these opportunties could accomplished with a few meetings, visits to recommended providers and presentations to the Council and congregation.
Mount Tabor is an already very involved and service-oriented church body. +One is a way to grow our service community with small asks, some very different ways to use our time and talents and contribute collectively to a large, highly visible and important ministry in our sacred space.
