Mt. Tabor Reconcilling in Christ Statement

As part of its mission, Reconciling Works began to incorporate a more inclusive nature to the work that it already does as advocates for the LGBTIA+ communities. One of the requirements that they asked was for churches to update their RIC Statements to include a commitment to social justice, in particular, racial justice. They asked that congregations do this work before the end of 2024,

Mt. Tabor has a long history of being an RIC congregation and a small task force began to discern, pray, and examine our past statements to shape a new one. After weeks of this hard work, the task force finally presented the statement to the council, and it was unanimously approved at the November council meeting on behalf of the congregation.

We acknowledge that we gather and minister on the ancestral lands of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute peoples.

We welcome all who seek God’s love and grace. Our unity is rooted in Christ, called by Jesus to love God and one another. We are committed to practicing radical hospitality and serving all without conditions. Mount Tabor is dedicated to celebrating the dignity of every person, particularly those in the LGBTQIA+ community who express their gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation in ways that challenge societal and local norms. We also affirm our welcome of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, as well as white allies committed to justice and equity.

We affirm the sacred worth of all, including those who struggle with addiction, mental or physical health challenges, imprisonment, socio-economic circumstances, or any other circumstance that divides us. We commit ourselves to the holy work of anti-racism, social and economic justice, and care for the environment. Together, we pledge to live as a reconciling people—on the path to the cross and in our outreach to the world—striving to embody God's love and justice in all that we do.
