Last week I learned that Linda Hilton's son, Scott, passed away. During the sixteen years that Linda worked for Crossroads Urban Center she did a lot of things, including: recruiting volunteers, organizing fundraising events and organizing meetings of the Coalition of Religious Communities. If you were connected to Crossroads Urban Center during the years she worked here then you probably met Linda Hilton.

When I began to work at Crossroads Urban Center in 2001 Scott Hilton was an eleven year old boy who helped fill food orders in our food pantry several days each week. I remember instantly being impressed that someone so young could be so cheerful about helping others. Over the years I was lucky enough to see him grow up while maintaining his unique personality. Details about his life and memorial service can be read in this touching, heartfelt, obituary.

If you read the rest of this newsletter you will find information about upcoming meetings and opportunities to make a difference in our community during the month of November. Thank you for all the big and small things you do to make Utah a kinder and more welcoming place.

MEETINGS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN NOVEMBER

FACE Hunger and Homelessness

Tour of Proposed Family Interim Housing Project

In recent years the number of families with children experiencing homelessness has increased dramatically and existing shelter beds for children have a long waiting list. The Family Interim Housing Project will address this problem by converting a hotel into shelter space where each family has a room of their own.

Monthly Virtual Meeting

This month our special guest will be representative Tyler Clancy, who will be joining us to talk about a bill he is preparing to run during the state legislative session that begins in January. His bill would:

  1. Expand eligibility for free & reduced lunch
  2. Eliminate school lunch debt
  3. Strengthen food banks & other programs that serve individuals experiencing hunger or food insecurity.
  4. Address stigma in school lunch practices.

Everyone is welcome to log in and learn about this effort to reduce child hunger in Utah.
