Hunger does not take a break during the summer but often times donations to food pantries decline in July and August. That is why several congregations in Salt Lake County come together each year to organize a food drive in July for Crossroads Urban Center's two emergency food pantries. To make the food drive a bit more fun and competitive a traveling "Golden Celery Trophy" is awarded to the congregation that donates the most food per person.

This year, in addition to the trophy, we are adding an extra level of friendly competition to the July food drive by awarding different certificates to congregations and group based on how many pounds they are able to collect and donate.

  • Congregations that donate between 1 and 999 pounds will receive a Bronze Certificate.
  • Congregations that donate between 1,000 and 1,999 pounds will receive a Silver Certificate.
  • Congregations that donate between 2,000 and 2,999 pounds will receive would receive a Gold Certificate
  • Congregations that donate between 3,000 and 3,999 pounds will receive a Platinum Certificate.
  • Congregations that donate between 4,000 and 4,999 pounds will receive a Palladium Certificate.
  • Congregations that donate over 5,000 pounds will receive a Rhodium Certificate.

The food drive begins tomorrow, July 1. To be counted in the competition for the trophy or the certificates donations will need to be received by August 5. Donations are accepted during business hours at both of our food pantries but if you need to deliver a donation at a different time for the July food drive we will work with you to make that possible.

You should be able to meet people from congregations participating in the food drive at our Meet the Candidates Barbecue next week. It appears likely the big budget reconciliation bill will pass this week and so the barbecue will be an opportunity to begin thinking about how we can respond to its passage at the state and local level.

We could also discuss that topic at a virtual meeting on Wednesday July 9. Since we are encouraging people to go to the barbecue on the 10th I am thinking that maybe we should cancel the FACE Hunger and Homelessness meeting for this month or move it back a week to July 16. I am scheduled to have neck surgery on August 1 an so it might be good to have a meeting this month since I do not know how quickly I will recover in August.

If we were to have a meeting this month would you prefer for it take place on July 9 or July 16? Either it would take place at noon on Zoom.
