Rally Sunday, September 9th

9:15am Sunday Education schedule for 2018-19 kicks off on September 9 with an activity for all ages:  "Welcome to God's Round Table!"

The meal we share as the Body of Christ in worship makes our circle of friendship grow wider and deeper every year.  We'll celebrate our community in Christ by learning how to bake Friendship bread with Sarah Lange. Meet in the narthex at 9:15am to learn the recipe and be part of the process!

We'll talk about how God's friendship meal helps us experience God' presence in the world. And how we can extend that friendship, and Tabor's welcome, into our neighborhoods, city, and daily life.

All ages and baking abilities are invited!

OAKS will be on Wednesday, September 12th at noon at Tabor.

Utah Food Bank Please mark your calendars that we will be sorting at the Food Bank on Saturday, September 15th from 10 am to noon.

Farewell and Godspeed to Michael and Margaret King on Sunday September 16 during worship.  The Kings are moving to Eugene, OR to be near family.  We thank them for the blessing they have been to us, and all the ways they have "lived God's love in the world" with us!

RMS Theological Conference at the YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park, CO Sept. 17-20.  Pr. David will be attending along with clergy leaders from the Utah Conference.

Faith, Ethics, and Science Roundtable for September 24:                                                                                        Imago Dei, DNA, and the Transhuman Way
Dr. Ted Peters from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley was one of our keynote speakers at last fall's "God and Human Suffering" conference at the Episcopal Church Center in SLC.

Has done a lot of work on the topic of Transhumanist philosophy, also known as H+.  A link to one of his most recent papers is below.

You are invited to come join the discussion on this topic that provides an intersection between what it means for us to be created in the image of God as people of faith, the implications for genetic research and engineering, and competing visions of the future of humanity.

We will meet at the Research Administration Bldg conference room at the University of Utah campus on Monday September 24 from 11:30am to 1pm.  See the Tabor website mttaborslc.org for this event, including an interactive campus map.  Please join us and invite friends and co-workers!

Tabor Hike, Saturday Sept 29th
Join us for a hike to Willow Lake in Big Cottonwood Canyon.  We’ll meet at the church on Saturday, September 29, at 9:00 am and carpool up the canyon about 11 miles to Silver Fork Lodge and then a few blocks beyond to the start of the trail, which is on the north side of the road.  The 2-mile round trip hike will take us through an aspen forest and around a small lake and meadow.  The scriptural focus will be Leviticus 23:40 (look up the verse and we’ll talk about it at the lake).  The hike has an elevation gain of 675 feet and is of moderate difficulty.   Wear good hiking shoes, and bring water and snacks as desired, hat and sunscreen.  No dogs are allowed in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Choir rehearsals meet on Tuesday nights at 7pm. New members are most welcome!

Operation Christmas Child  Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, has collected and delivered more than 157 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 160 countries and territories. A recent story is about a girl who grew up as an orphan in Guatemala and received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift with great joy. Adopted by a U.S. family shortly after she received her shoebox gift, Jaki has become a gifted musician and testifies about God’s amazing grace as working in her life in many ways.

This year our shoebox gifts will be due on Nov 11. Remember, $9 is needed for shipping costs for each box. Suggestions for September are little games. Please ask me any questions and check out Operation Child online or Facebook for ideas. I will keep you informed as I hope to have a couple times scheduled to help assemble boxes. You can still do your own also. Thanks for all you do.  Jean Stephenson

Crossroads Food Barrel: You are invited to bring non-perishable food donations to the barrel in the narthex for the local food pantry.  They are in need of canned tomatoes and boxed meals.  All donations are appreciated.  Food is delivered weekly to Crossroads on 400 East in SLC.  Also in need of Back to school clothes (Kids Fall clothing) for the Thrift Store.

Visit our spiritual direction room.  Come up the east stairs, and it's the fourth door on the left(Room #10). Stay as long as you like for prayer, meditation, or just a quiet moment for yourself.  Please put all books back in the shelf before you leave.  You will find things to take home with you as well. Many thanks to Pr. DanaLee Simon for making this available to us all!
